More detail on this person: Gary Vincent Burt November 6, 1941 ~ February 11, 2011 SALINAS - Gary Vincent Burt, 69, born November 6, 1941 in Wichita, Kansas to Johnnie C Burt and Mickey Pearl (Nunn) Burt, went home to be with his Lord and Savior February 11, 2011. Gary was raised by his mother and aunt. From an early age his two loves were reading and baseball. At the age of 16 he had enough credits to graduate from West High School, but stayed his senior year so he could play ball one more year. Although he was being scouted by pro teams, he decided to enter the U.S. Army on his 18th birthday. Honorably discharged in 1962, he attended Mars Hill College in North Carolina before being accepted to Officers Training School. He served as a Captain in the 101st airborne. He did three tours in Viet Nam, and his medals and honors include a Silver Star, Distinguished Flying Cross 3rd OLC, Viet Nam Cross of Gallantry with Bronze Star, Bronze Star with Palm, National Defense Service Medal, and Army Commendation Medal 1st OLC. He was honorably discharged in 1977. After the service Gary returned to college, was ordained as a Minister, and pastored a small church in Boone, North Carolina. He left Boone to do volunteer work for the Billy Graham organization in Charlotte, North Carolina where he was employed as a General Manager for Young Ford. In the 1980s he traveled to California, and became General Manager at Bergstrom Motors in Santa Cruz where he met his companion, Kristine Guertner. He eventually grew tired of the car business and returned to security work. He became a guard at the Presidio of Monterey, and in 2003 at the age of 61, became a police officer at the Presidio of Monterey. He retired in 2008. After retirement he enjoyed spending time with his family, reading, writing, and studying the Bible. Gary is survived by his companion, Kristine Guertner; the daughter of his heart, Jennifer Guertner; his extended family, Keith and Iola Guertner. Visitation will be Thursday, February 17, 2011 from 1:00pm to 5:00pm at the Struve and Laporte Chapel, 41 W. San Luis St., Salinas, CA 93901. Funeral Service will be held Friday, February 18, 2011 at 11:00am at the Struve and Laporte Chapel. Burial will be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
