More detail on this person: Pierre Herman Begnaud, who played on the 1944 Port Arthur Yellow Jacket state champion team, passed away on Saturday.

Begnaud's Yellow Jacket team defeated Dallas' Doak Walker and Highland Park 20-7 in the first of two consecutive state championship games Highland Park played in.

According to another member of the '44 team, Walker said the worst beating he ever took on a football field was that championship against Port Arthur.

Begnaud lived in Buna, was a retired colonel in the Marines and is survived by his wife, three sons, four granchildren and two great-granchildren.

P.H. Pete Begnaud, 84, of Buna died June 18, 2011 at Avalon Place Nursing Home. Born in Beaux Bridge, LA September 30, 1926 and raised in Port Arthur. Pete was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. Never met a stranger and friend to all. Active in the Buna Lions Club, Little League Coach and umpire, supporter of Buna athletics, Bar-be-quer and chef for numerous occasions and member of the 1944 State Championship Port Arthur Yellowjacket football team. Faithful member of Our Lady of St. Francis LaSalette Catholic Churches. Piere Herman was a retired Colonel in the Marines and lived their motto,Semper Fidelis, Always Faithful. Herman is survived by his wife Mary Jean Mickey Begnaud of Buna; sons James Leo Begnaud of Buna; Pete Begnaud and wife Gay Nell of Buna; and John Begnaud and his wife Cheryl of Sour Lake; grandchildren Micah and his wife Causey of Buna; Daniel Begnaud of Buna and fiance' Colby of China; and Todd Begnaud of Sour Lake; great grandchildren Noah Begnaud of Buna and Hannah Begnaud of Buna; brothers Leo Begnaud and his wife Barbelle of Nederland and Harry Begnaud and his wife Rose Mary of Sugarland; and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Wake service will be at Adams EE Stringer Funeral Home in Buna Monday, June 20, at 7:00 p.m. and Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of LaSalette Catholic Church in Kirbyville Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. with burial to follow at Antioch Cemetery in Buna.
