More detail on this person: Merle Brander, 73, died Jan. 16, 2013, in Hudson, Wis., due to complications related to Alzheimer's. He was born Nov. 5, 1939, to the late Gust and Margaret Brander of Wallace, Mich. He graduated from Michigan Tech in 1962 and entered the U.S. Marine Corps immediately thereafter, serving one tour of duty as a helicopter pilot in Viet Nam, and leaving with the rank of Captain. In 1965, he married the former Shirley Peterson. In 1981, he and his wife founded Brander Construction Technology, Inc., an engineering company in Green Bay, Wis.

Besides his wife, Mr. Brander is survived by two sons, Clayton (Jenni), Powell River, British Columbia, Canada; and Kent (Claudia), Woodbury, Minn.; four grandchildren, Valentina, Erin, Santiago, and Cassius; three sisters, Shirley (Bob) Nordin, Daggett, Mich.; Elaine Dougovito, L'anse, Mich.; and Marge (Charlie) Gray, Pueblo, Colo.; mother-in-law, Joyce Peterson, Artesia, N.M.; sister and brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews. There will be a memorial service at the Bethel Mission Covenant Church in Wallace, Mich., on Wednesday, Jan. 23, with Pastor John Lindt officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Spina Bifida Association.
