More detail on this person: Calvin S. Champion, 74, of Rapid City, died Wednesday, May 25, 2011, at the Fort Meade VA Medical Center, SD. He proudly served in the United States Marine Corps from 1959 to 1979. Cal was a Vietnam era helicopter pilot who earned two Distinguished Flying crosses as well as numerous other awards and decorations. He was retired from active duty after 20 years of honorable service. After his retirement, Cal served his community as the Commanding Officer of the Marine Corps League in the Rapid City area as well as serving as a volunteer firefighter in the Johnson Siding Volunteer Fire Department. Survivors include his sister, Mildred Black of Alameda, CA; nieces Sharon Linde, Custer, SD, and Marie Hindman, AZ; nephews Edward Champion of Rapid City, SD, and Robert Champion, MT. He is preceded in death by his brother, Robert "Red" Champion of Rapid City. Services will be on Saturday, May 28 at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, SD. Military honors will be provided by the Marine Corps League, with inurnment to follow
