More detail on this person: JOHN MICHELE DEMARIA SR. John Michele DeMaria Sr., died Saturday, April 11, 2009. He was born in Altoona, Pa., and had made his home in Newport News since 1963. He served in the U. S. Coast Guard during WWII participating in seven Pacific Invasions including Iwo Jima. He retired from the U. S. Army as a Lt. Col. having served two tours of duty in Vietnam as an Army Pilot. He served his country proudly for 30 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Michele and Bambina DeMaria. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Ruth Melzer DeMaria; his daughters, Denise Jenkins and her husband, Sam of Crozier and Mitzi Anne Land and her husband, Jeff of Salisbury, N.C.; his son, John M. DeMaria Jr. and his wife, Ellen of Newport News; and five grandchildren, Laura, Lindsay and John DeMaria, III and Hunter and Harrison Land. A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. July 2, 2009, at Arlington National Cemetery with Full Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Personal Touch Home Care & Hospice Foundation, 5505 Robin Hood Rd, Suite C-1, Norfolk, VA 23513.
