More detail on this person: ROBERT B. ENGESSER Retired U.S. Marine Corps Col. Robert B. Engesser, an aviator, 78, made his final approach while in home hospice care. He slipped the surly bonds of Earth and was received by his Creator and Lord at 0930 hours on April 27, 2000. Robert was born in Akron, Ohio, on July 11, 1921. For most of his early years, Milwaukee, Wisc., was home. After high school, he attended Marquette University for two years. At the outset of World War II, he enrolled in the Naval Aviation Cadet Program and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps. Robert's military career spanned 35 years and he was a veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He completed his bachelor's degree at the University of Maryland. Robert flew helicopters for most of his military career including a stint as a medivac pilot in Korea. He later commanded a Marine helicopter group in Jacksonville, N.C. Robert will be deeply missed by his beloved Dorothy (nee: Fitzgerald of Kansas City, Mo.) and his three children, Frederick Joseph of Baltimore and Mary Jo and Cathy Ann, both of Virginia Beach. Robert was also blessed with a loving daughter-in-law, Linda, and grandchildren, Jennifer and Katie. Robert was a Roman Catholic and attended the Church of the Ascension in Virginia Beach. A private mass will be held in celebration of his life by the Rev. Jim Parke and the Rev. Constantine Sailayo. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Little Sisters of the Poor, 1503 Michael Road, Richmond, VA 23229-4899; The Norfolk Catholic Worker, 1321 W. 38th St., Norfolk, VA 23508; or to the Lymphoma Research Foundation of America, 8800 Venice Blvd., No. 207, Los Angeles, CA 90034. Kellum Funeral Home, Pleasant Hall Chapel, is handling arrangements. ''Heartfelt thanks to Diane, Cindy, Marsha, Wendy and Kelly, his hospice team Valerie and Susan, we are ever grateful for your loving and devoted care of Robert.''
