Francioni, born April 24, 1947, in Richmond, Va., died in Punta Gorda, Fla. on May 20, 2004. Formerly of Colonial Heights, he was a retired Colonel of the United States Army Aviation Corps. He entered service in 1964, and retired in 1994. After retirement, he was employed by the FAA as an Aviation Safety Inspector in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He attended the Command and General Staff College, The Army War College, and is a graduate of Chapman College with a bachelor's degree in history. In addition, Mr. Francioni was a member in The North South Skirmish Association. He served two tours in Viet Nam with the First Calvary Division. He was a highly decorated veteran, having received the Legion of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, numerous medals for valor and two Purple Hearts. He is survived by his wife, Patricia; two daughters, Michelle Martinez and husband, Henry, and Rebecca Knesek and husband, Edwin Joseph Knesek III; five grandchildren, Leon, Vivian, Yvonne Martinez, Edwin Joseph Knesek IV, Emily Margaret Knesek; a sister, Jeanette Gainer and husband, David, and their children, Jim Rockwell, Trevor Rockwell and Ryan Marker; and an aunt, Nannie McComas. A graveside memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 27, 2004, with full military honors at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Petersburg. Immediately following the service, the family will be receiving guests at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. David Bowling at 2821 River Bank Circle in Charles City, Va. Funeral arrangements by the Colonial Heights Chapel of the E. Alvin Small Funeral Home & Crematory, 2033 Boulevard.
