More detail on this person: On December 1, 2014 at his home in Haymarket, VA. At just over 84 years old, Thomas Holmes was the second of three children of James Holmes and Maggie Simmons of Memphis, Tennessee. Tom was born in Memphis, spent his childhood in Memphis, Chicago, and Cleveland. He attended Manassas High School in Memphis. Tom served 23 years in the US Army from 1954 to 1977 and attained the rank of CW4 Warrant Officer. Tom was a master aviator of both rotor wing and fixed wing aircraft. He was an Instructor Pilot, Instrument Flight Examiner, operational pilot, and Certified Safety Professional. As an army aviator, Tom flew more than 3,000 hours, served two tours in Vietnam ('62-'63 and '67-'68) and earned the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal and the Air Medal.

After retiring from the Army, Tom enjoyed an extensive and successful civilian career as a Certified Safety Professional working as a safety and loss prevention executive for the Marriott Corporation, Gannett Corporation and as the head of his own firm, Holmes Safety Associates, which he ran until full retirement in 2008.

Tom is survived by his sister Mabel, his wife Linda, and their daughter and son-in-law, Alisa and Dave Rennyson and their three children. He is pre-deceased by his first wife Bobbie Jean, and is survived by his children from that marriage Sharon, Rheba, Rhonda, and Kenneth and many grandchildren.

Family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m., Thursday, December 4 at Fairfax Memorial Funeral Home, 9902 Braddock Rd., where a service of Remembrance will follow on December 5 at 1 p.m. A funeral service, will be held at the Old Post Chapel, Ft. Myer, followed by interment with full military honors in Arlington National Cemetery at a date yet to be determined.
