More detail on this person: Nicholas George Hlywa Nov. 3, 1935 - April 30, 2006 Nicholas George Hlywa, 70, of Huntsville died Sunday. He was born in Detroit to George and Sarah Mucha Hlywa. He graduated from North Jackson High School in 1954 and the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1968. In 1954, he embarked on a 20-year military career with the Army. He served in Korea and Vietnam, where he earned the Air Medal with Valor Medal as an aircraft commander and flight leader while attached to Company B, 227th Aviation Battalion. Nick retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1974. In 2005, he was inducted into the Madison County Hall of Heroes for his service in Vietnam. Upon retirement, Mr. Hlywa, his then wife, Nancy Truitt and daughter, Crystal, traveled for one year, driving from Denmark to South Africa. From 1982 to 1984, as a Peace Corp volunteer, Mr. Hlywa served in Botswana, Africa. He traveled extensively throughout his life to Europe, Asia, South Africa and South America and visited all 50 states. He worked for 3M and later, Bell Helicopter in Iran. An avid boater, Mr. Hlywa lived on a houseboat in Washington, D.C., a motor sailor in Florida and traveled by tramp steamer to Brazil. He settled in the Huntsville area in 1994. Mr. Hlywa was an active member of Cahaba Shrine, American Legion, VFW, a charter member of the Elks Lodge in Pell City, the Eagles and the Masonic Lodge. Survivors include daughter, Crystal Daprile; granddaughters, Lauren, Kate and Madeline; former wives, Nancy Sale and Susan Parks; partner, Brenda Stephenson; and a lifetime of friends. A date for the interment at Arlington National Cemetery is yet to be determined and a memorial service in Youngstown, Ohio, will be held at a later date.
