L."Larry" Horen joined the U.S. Army after he
graduated from Western Michigan University in
1969. Also an ROTC graduate, he commisioned as
a second lieutenant in the Army's Medical Service
Corp. He immediately applied for and was
accepted for helicopter flight training. He
graduated with Fort Rucker class 70-42 in
December 1970 and then attended the Essential
Medical training for Ammed Aviators enroute to
Vietnam. In February 1971 he was assigned to the
68th Medical Detachment (Helicopter Ambulance)
in Chu Lai, Vietnam where he was Dustoff pilot.
After his Vietnam tour he was assigned to the 82nd
Medical Detachment (Helicopter Ambulance) at Fort
Riley, Kansas where he continued to fly as a
Dustoff pilot. Larry held many jobs during his
twenty year career which included Ground
Ambulance Company Executive Officer; Medical
Clinic Executive Officer Camp Zama, Japan;
Commander, 431st Medical Detachment (Helicopter
Ambulance) at Fort Knox, Kentucky; Commander
Flat Iron, Fort Rucker Alabama; and he
Commanded a Combat Support Hospital. This information was last updated 05/18/2016

After he retired from the Army he worked for
Champus and then changed jobs to work for the
Red Cross. Larry was a true friend and a darn
fine aviator.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Horen, 121
Brookwood Drive, Lagrange, GA. She is currently
stationed in Iraq as a member of the Alabama
National Guard; Daughter, Cherie Schmidt, Zeeland,
Michigan; Daughter, Heather Hughes, Nashville,
Tennessee; Two grand children, Hannah and Logan
Schmidt of Zeeland, Michigan and a stepdaughter,
Susan Holmes.
He was preceded in death by his son, Jason Horen,
of Ozark, Alabama.
