More detail on this person: HENDERSONVILLE--Larry Harris, 67, died June 11 after a sudden illness. He was born and raised in Hendersonville, son of James Franklin Harris and Naomi Pace Harris. He graduated Hendersonville High in 1964, then graduated AB Tech with an Associate's Degree in Art. He served in the army 1968-1972, including in Vietnam as U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer and was in the 23rd Infantry Division, 16th Combat Aviation Group. He served in the Henderson County Sheriff's Department as a detective from 1973-1988 and designed the Department badge in 1976. He then worked with the Regional Counter-Narcotics Task Force, 1988-1994. He was employed by U.S. Security Associates as the Operating Unit Manager for contract protective services in WNC, Upstate SC, Western Virginia and Eastern TN and was Director of Corporate Security, West Coast Florida, for Elite Protection Services, a division of Security Services of America.

Larry was a Certified Protection Professional (CCP). He accumulated over thirty years of experience as a diversified military, law enforcement and industrial security specialist with over twenty as a public law enforcement senior investigator in criminal investigation, crime scene technology, financial investigations and complex case management. He accrued over 4,000 hours flight time as a military, police and commercial helicopter pilot.

He worked in Saudi Arabia with Northrup Grumman Mission Systems/Vinnel Arabia as a military trainer OPCON to the Office of the Program Manager, U.S. Army, Saudi Arabian National Guard Modernization Program.

In 2008 he deployed to Iraq as a forensic services crime scene investigator for the Department of State Regional Security Office of the Diplomatic Security Service after being selected as a member of a hand-picked team of investigators for the Iraq Force Investigative Unit. He served there until his retirement in March 2013.

He was a contributing columnist for "Homeland Security Today" magazine and "StrategyPage.com".

Larry was a brilliant, tough, real-life hero working in some of the most dangerous situations and places in the world. He was also a protective, caring person who dearly loved Sophia, a little blind Yorkie he raised with Paula Campbell, to whom he was married for 17 years.

A Celebration of Life will be held at The Cedars on Saturday, June 22 at 5:30. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Larry may be made to the Hendersonville Blue Ridge Humane Society, www.blueridgehumane.org.
