More detail on this person: Herbert M. Herther Sr. Herbert Matthews Herther Sr., 81, of Caroline County passed away Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2014, at Retreat Hospital in Richmond after a courageous battle with cancer. Mr. Herther was a retired U.S. Marine Corps lieutenant colonel with 23 years of service. He was an F-4 pilot who had received the National Defense Service Medal with one star, Vietnam Service Medal with three stars, Air Medal with gold star and the RVN Cross of Gallantry with palm and frame. Mr. Herther later retired from the Fredericksburg office of VDOT as district equipment engineer. He was the owner of AA Appliance in Caroline. He was the owner of Sweet Gum Antiques at the Virginia Bazaar and president of the Virginia Bazaar Fellowship Association. Survivors include his wife, Jane Herther; sons Herbert M. Herther Jr., Eddie Hurd and Frank Sawyer; daughters Stacy Marie Woldie, Becky Burney, Beth Moxley, Jennifer Dixon, Karen Bowman and Diana Walls; 21 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and his loving caregiver, Brenda Griner. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 18, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. A service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, at the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow at noon in Quantico National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Virginia Bazaar Fellowship Association.
