Hyde, 68, of Aliq u i p p a, p a s s e d away Friday, February 24, 2012, at Heritage Valley Beaver. Born June 19, 1943, in Uniontown, he was a son of the late James R. and Virginia E. (Glover) Hyde. Following high school graduation in 1961, he attended Kent State University before joining the U.S. Army in 1965 where he served as a combat helicopter pilot. Richard earned the title of brave pilot from the South Vietnamese after taking his helicopter under intense enemy fire to rescue nine seriously wounded Vietnamese soldiers and was cited with the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry for his action. In an earlier action, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for flying his bullet-ridden aircraft in and out of a hostile area for 11 hours, rescuing 36 battle casualties. He finished his tour of duty as an instructor pilot for the 1st Aviation Brigade near Saigon. Upon his discharge, Richard was employed as an executive in the housing industry. His hobbies included flying, playing his trumpet, hunting and fishing. He leaves his wife, Jane E. Hyde; four sons, Chris Schreiber and his wife, Chantel, of Providence, Rhode Island; Rick Hyde and his wife, Leisa, of Byesville, Ohio; Kenny Hyde and his wife, Pauline, of Wampum, and Alan Hyde in Colorado; two sisters, Joyce Lane of Dubois, and Jeanette Hyde Jurich and her husband, Steven, of Beaver. Richard was blessed with numerous grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, nieces and nephews, and his adopted sons, John Pierce and his family, of Austin, Penna., and Ernie Potts and Beth Ann of Aliquippa. Per Richard's wishes, there will be no visitation and all services will be private. The family is being assisted by SIMPSON FUNERAL & CREMATION SERVICES, 1119 Washington Ave., Monaca, (724-728-4000). The family would like to express their gratitude to the Heritage Valley Beaver, 2nd Floor nursing staff for the compassionate care Richard received. The family has suggested memorial contributions be made, if desired, to the Beaver County Humane Society, P.O.
