More detail on this person: MR. EDMUND HAYES RETIRED US ARMY Entered into rest September 19, 2002, at the V.A. Medical Center in Augusta. Mr. Edmund James Hayes Jr. of Aumond Road in Augusta. Family members include his father, Edmund J. Hayes Sr. of Evans; sisters, Cherry H. Lynch of Augusta; Catherine H. Sumner of Evans and several loving nieces and nephews. Mr. Hayes is a native of Atlanta, Ga. He lived in Augusta for the last three years. He was a world traveler. He retired after 18 years of service with the US Army but had also been in the US Navy. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Silver Star. He was an active member of the Vietnam Helicopter Crew Members Association. He was known as "Barney" to many, especially his Harley motorcycle club friends. He was a member of a model builders club and he was a Catholic. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Tuesday, September 24, 2002, at 2 p.m. at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church with Fr. Thomas J. Peyton celebrant. The family will receive friends following the Mass at the church. Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 1899 Central Ave. Augusta, GA 30904 or St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church: 117 Pleasant Home Road: Augusta, GA30907.
