Thibodaux man killed in chopper crash COVENT (AP) - A Thibodaux man was killed Thursday when his helicopter plunged into a southeast Louisiana swamp, St. James Parish authorities said. Lt. Ray Green of the parish Sheriff Office said Federal Aviation Administration officials were expected to visit the scene of the crash Friday. He said authorities had no idea Thursday what caused the crash that killed Philip Hickey, 36. Hickey was flying the aircraft for Skyline Co. when it went down near La. 3127, Green said. The chopper was being used to help clear cypress trees from the swamp for Timber Realization Co. Bruce Boudreaux, an ambulance attendant for Acadian Ambulance Service, said he and a partner were airlifted to the general area, then trudged through the water to get to Hickey. "We waded through mud and swamp and woods for about a half mile," Boudreaux said. Meanwhile, workers who were part of the timber clearing project had gotten Hickey out of the wreckage and placed him on a stretcher. Another helicopter dropped a line to the crash site and the victim was flown, suspended from the chopper, to an area he could be lifted onto the aircraft, Boudreaux said. He was transported to the Thibodaux General Hospital. Officials there said he was dead on arrival at 1:15 p.m.
