More detail on this person: T-42A Beech Baron lost an engine and crashed in the Sierras southwest of Bishop, CA. Richmond GI Among Air Crash Victims EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE - A 25-year-old Army private from Richmond was among the three servicemen killed in the crash of a small, twin-engined airplane into a ridge 18 miles southwest of Bishop. An Army spokesman identified the Richmond man as Pfc. Alan C. Schardijn, of 2873 Esmond Ave. Also killed in the crash Thursday night, the Army announced, were Lt. Col. William R. Horton, 40, of Merkel, Tex. and Capt. Michael A. Hawley, 29, of Oxnard, Ohio. The men were on a flight from the Army training center at the Air Force base to Bishop. After reconnoitering a possible training area for helicopter flights, the men were heading toward Fresno when the aircraft struck the ridge at 11,000 feet, according to the Army. 26 MAY 76 LTC William R. Horton [P] CPT Michael A. Hawley [CP] PV2 Alan C. Schardijn California U SAAEFA T-42A #65-12706 A/C was on night training flight in VFR conditions at dusk when it crashed at approx 1910 hrs into a cliff at 12,450' on mountain ridge 18 mi SW of Bishop on a flight from Edwards AFB enroute to Fresno. Crew flew A/C into a box canyon at insufficient altitude with suspected stoppage of left engine at critical point in flight.
