Holmes, 70, of Marietta died June 19, 2013. He was
born to the late William T. Holmes Sr. and Essie
Mae Holmes, April 13, 1943 in Dublin, Ga. He
graduated from Dublin High School in 1961. On
September 18, 1971 he married Peggy Baugh of
White Pigeon, Michigan in Atlanta. In the spring
of 1965 Tom was commissioned as a second
lieutenant in the US Marine Corp and designated a
naval aviator. On December 7, 1965 he entered the
Vietnam War as a combat assault helicopter pilot.
Tom survived his first mission after his
helicopter was shot down the following day,
December 8, 1965. He became a first lieutenant
and was later promoted to the rank of captain. Tom
worked for 25 years for the George F. Cram
Publishing Company and for 17 years with Home
Depot. Tom was an aviation enthusiast, an avid
music lover and voracious reader. His favorite
pastimes were spending time with friends and
family, reading, and playing his guitar. Tom is
survived by his spouse of 41 years, Peggy, and his
daughter, Carrie. Graveside Services will be held
at the Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA at
1:30 PM on Monday, June 24, 2013. Visitation will
be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Mayes Ward-Dobbins
Funeral Home in Marietta, GA on Sunday, June 23
2013. Memorial donations may be made to the
Laurens County Historical Society, 311 Academy
