Joe was instrumental in the development of the DuPont Motorsports program and routinely represented the company at NASCAR races. His entire 36 year DuPont career was spent in the Automotive Refinish business. NASCAR along with his family and friends were Joe's passions. He loved the sport and DuPont's role in it. His dedication to his company and his family was apparent to all. His DuPont colleagues and the entire Hendrick Motorsports team were his extended family, and he had a deep love and appreciation for each of them. Joe Jackson, 58 of Virginia Citadel grad among Hendrick crash dead Post and Courier, The (Charleston, SC) - Wednesday, October 27, 2004 NASCAR NOTES A Citadel graduate who flew Army helicopters during the Vietnam War was among the 10 people killed when a Hendrick Motorsports airplane crashed Sunday en route to the Nextel Cup event in Martinsville, Va. Joe Jackson, 58, worked as director of motorsports for DuPont, the company that sponsors the car of Hendrick Motorsports driver Jeff Gordon. A 36-year employee of DuPont's automotive refinishing business, he is survived by his wife Jan, daughter Jayne White, son Jeff and two grandchildren. "NASCAR was a passion for Joe," DuPont group vice president Ed Donnelly wrote in a letter to employees. "He loved the sport and all in it. His dedication to our business was apparent to all of us." Investigators continued to search for clues Tuesday to why the Beech 200 King Air went down in apparently foggy conditions near Patrick Springs, Va. The aircraft did not contain a flight data or cockpit voice recorder. According to The Associated Press, the plane missed its first landing attempt before it veered off course and smashed into Bull Mountain. Pilots of at least 20 other planes, most of them carrying sponsors and race fans, decided it was too dangerous to land at Blue Ridge Airport on Sunday, and instead touched down in Danville, Va., the AP reported. Mike Rembold, manager of General Aviation Inc. at the Danville airport, said the pilots couldn't get into Blue Ridge because of the fog. "They were missing approaches," he told the AP. "They would go down and not see the runway and then go back up. They headed here instead." The dead included four Hendrick team executives, including Ricky Hendrick, son of team owner Rick Hendrick, who was ill and did not attend the race. Hendrick Motorsports has scheduled a candlelight memorial service that is open to the public at its Charlotte headquarters today from 6-8 p.m.
