More detail on this person: WILLIAM JOHNSON, RETIRED COLONEL William Matthew Johnson, 72, of Lancaster, died Saturday at Lancaster General Hospital following a long illness. He was married for 48 years to Angie Johnson, who died in April. Johnson graduated from Penn State University with a bachelor's degree in economics. He served in the Army from 1952 to 1979 before retiring as a colonel. He was a Vietnam veteran and also worked in research and development at the Pentagon. A graduate of the Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kan., Johnson received the Vietnam Service Medal for eight campaigns in Vietnam. He flew two tours in Vietnam and was battalion commander at Fort Monmouth, N.J. He also was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. After retiring from the military, he worked for three years as coordinator of York Emergency Management, where he oversaw the modernization of 911 emergency telephone service. He then served for eight years as coordinator of the Lancaster Emergency Management Agency before retiring in 1991. A 23-year resident of Lancaster, he also lived in Asia, Europe and other parts of the United States during his military career. He was a member of the Elks, Meadia Heights Country Club, Lancaster County Shrine Club, Penn State Alumni Assocation and Susquehanna Defense Depot Club. He was a founding member of The Retired Officers' Assocation. He was a Free & Accepted Mason, Lodge 43, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite. Johnson traveled extensively with his wife and was of the Episcopal faith. Born in Mount Lebanon, he was a son of the late William and Dorothy Collins Johnson. Surviving are four daughters: Debbie L. Johnson, wife of Craig Griffin, San Gabriel, Calif.; Karen M. Johnson, Lancaster; Kathy A., wife of Peter J. Plaxa, Mount Joy; and Patty L., wife of Dave A. Pitler, New Hope; six grandchildren; two sisters, Janet, wife of Ralph Hernandez, Houston, Texas; and Judy, wife of Phil Meeder, Annapolis, Md.; two brothers, George, husband of Linda Johnson, Austin, Texas; and David, husband of Susan Werle, Middlebury, Vt.; and a stepmother, Helen Johnson, Houston.
