James Lee Jaap, a career military officer and highly decorated veteran of the Vietnam War, died Friday of cancer at his home in Annapolis after a brief illness. He was 57. Born in Jackson, Miss., Maj. Jaap had lived in the Annapolis area since 1972. He served 22 years in the military as a paratrooper, adviser, instructor, and helicopter pilot from 1952 until his retirement in 1974. At the time of his death, he worked as a salesman at Thompson Dodge in Dundalk, where he received the top sales award last year. Among his military awards were the Silver Star, three Bronze Stars, the Air Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, four Distinguished Flying Crosses and the Vietnamese Cross of Valor. Maj. Jaap served two tours in Vietnam, first in 1963 as an adviser to the Vietnamese in the Cau Mau Peninsula. After retraining as a helicopter pilot, he returned with the 25th Infantry Division in 1967 and again in 1968 during the Tet Offensive, where he received the Silver Star for heroism in the rescue of Air Force personnel from rooftops in Saigon. Before and after his Vietnamese tours, he was an instructor at Fort Benning, Ga., and he was also stationed in Germany. His last military post was at Fort George G. Meade. He attended St. Anne's Episcopal Church in Annapolis and enjoyed fishing, walks on the beach, traveling, biking, horses, and bird watching. Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Barbara M. Jaap; three daughters, Natascha M. Shaver of Waldorf and Rebecca A. Jaap and Jennifer L. Jaap, both of Annapolis; four brothers, Charles O. Jaap IV of Tampa, Fla., John C. Jaap of Salisbury, N.C., William L. Jaap of Vero Beach, Fla., and Gerald B. Jaap of Kent, Ohio; two sisters, Myra L. Spiller of Buda, Texas and Nancy J. Koontz of Homestead, Fla.; and one grandchild. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Anne's Episcopal Church on Church Circle in Annapolis. Interment with full military honors will follow at 3 p.m. in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Judes Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
