More detail on this person: Sanford N. 'Sandy'
Kaplan of Lower Makefield Township died June 5, at
the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. He
was 74.
He was born in Newark, N.J. to the late Syma and
Harry Kaplan.
He is survived by his wife of almost 50 years,
Doreene; his son, Shawn and wife, Elle; and
grandchildren, Christina and Tyler; and his
daughter Paige and her husband, Jim Schurr and
grandchildren, Sophia and Sammy.
Sandy lived life with passion, curiosity and an
infectious sense of humor. He loved sailing,
inventing and learning new things, laughing and
telling stories drawn from his interesting life
experiences. People were always saying 'you
should write a book' and finally he did, 'An
Aviator's Story.'
Sandy had many interests but two overriding
passions. His first and most important passion was
his family, and he did an outstanding job of
making his wife, children and grandchildren feel
his love, protection and devotion.
Close behind was his passion for flying. From the
time of his first model airplane all he ever
really wanted to do was to fly. He was a combat
helicopter pilot in Vietnam and was very proud of
his service to his country. After the service he
flew all kinds of missions from delivering Santas
to putting out forest fires, filming for movies
and television shows, and ferrying celebrities,
politicians and other notables. The final twenty
years of his career were spent as a corporate
pilot for Dow Jones and Co., Inc.
