More detail on this person: Librarian King
called 'inspiration', Longtime director at Edward
Waters College dies at 56.
By STEVE PATTERSON, The Times-Union
Charles N. King, the longtime library director for
Edward Waters College, died Thursday following an
apparent heart attack. He was 56. Mr. King had
worked at the college for 24 years. A close
colleague described him Saturday as someone who
was open and warm. "He was a great guy. ... He
was a good boss to have. He seemed not really like
a boss, more like a brother," said Gwendolyn
Gatson, who worked for him for more than 20 years.
"He was just an inspiration. ... He taught me so
much. Can you imagine me going in there Monday,
and him not being there?"
Mr. King was born in Searcy, Ark., and grew up in
Texas and Missouri. He served in the Army's First
Cavalry Division during the Vietnam War, piloting
helicopters as a first lieutenant. He graduated
from Southwest Missouri State University and the
University of Missouri in Columbia, where he
earned a master's degree from the school's library
science college. He worked as a librarian in
Anderson, S.C., before moving to Jacksonville in
1979. He was hired that year at Edward Waters and
became the library director soon after. Mr. King
had been the president of his neighborhood's
homeowners association and was a passionate
Jacksonville Jaguars fan.
He is survived by his wife, Carole L. Fader; his
father, Walter D. King, and a brother, David King,
both of Springfield, Mo.; as well as nephews,
nieces and other relatives.
The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at
Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home, 850 N. St. Johns
Bluff Road, with burial in Chapel Hills Memory
Gardens.
KING Charles N. King, 56, of Jacksonville died
Thursday, January 1, 2004. He will be greatly
missed by his wife and loving companion of 32
years, Carole L. Fader of Jacksonville; his
father, Walter D. King of Springfield, Mo.; his
brother, David King and his sister- in-law, Anita
King; his nephew Michael and niece Laura, all of
Springfield, Mo; his mother- in-law, Silvia G.
Fader of Pompano Beach, Fla.; his brother- in- law

Charles, lovingly called Chuck, was born in
Searcy, Ark., reared in Canyon, Texas and moved
with his family to Springfield, Mo., in 1964. He
graduated from Greenwood High School in
Springfield and from Southwest Missouri State
University in 1969. He was a member of the First
Cavalry, U. S. Army, where he attained the rank of
First Lieutenant. He was a helicopter pilot during
the Vietnam War and served his country with valor
and honor. After his release from the Army, Chuck
attended the School of Library and Information
Science at the University of Missouri in Columbia
and graduated with a master's degree in 1974.
Chuck loved the warm weather and moved south
with Carole to Anderson S.C., where he worked as
a librarian for the Anderson Public Library. But
Anderson wasn't warm enough, so Chuck and
Carole relocated to Jacksonville in 1979. There he
found a perfect home at Edward Waters College. He
shortly became Library Director and was known and
loved by faculty, students and staff alike for the
24 years he worked there. He also helped his
community, serving as president of his homeowners
association for three years. He loved the
Jacksonville Jaguars, never missing a game since
their first season. He loved boating, fishing,
movies, instructional television and news
programs. He had many interests and was
knowledgeable about many subjects. He was a
perfect handyman and woodworker and could fix
anythin g that became broken. Chuck was a special
person ... kind, patient and forgiving, humorous
in his own way, easygoing and wonderful to be
around. Everyone who knew him will miss him
immensely. The funeral service will be Tuesday at
1:00 PM at HARDAGE- GIDDENS FUNERAL
HOME, 850 N. St. Johns Bluff Road, Jacksonville.
Burial will follow in Chapel Hills Memory Gardens,
