More detail on this person: Ken Kalahar died at home Thursday, September 27, 2012.

He was born May 12, 1945 to Jeanne (Hilton) and Kenneth H. Kalahar. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, September 30 at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday, October 1, 2012 at Caldwell Raddatz Funeral Chapel, 8201 Hickman Road, Urbandale. Burial will follow in the Iowa Veterans Cemetery, Van Meter.

Ken graduated from Mason City High School and earned a bachelor's degree in Industrial Education from Iowa State University. He was a helicopter pilot in the US Army, serving in both Korea and Viet Nam. He was a member of the 372nd Construction Engineers for the Iowa Army Reserve attaining the rank of CW4.

He was employed at Armstrong Tire, Archer-Daniels-Midland, and Firestone Agricultural Tires.

Ken is survived by his wife Joanne (Stangl); his son, Tad (Mary Ellen); and granddaughters, Kristi and Jessica of Liverpool, NY; his mother, Jeanne of Mason City; sisters, Sue (Paul) Klevos of Humboldt, IA, and Jodie (Terry) Stevens of Alexander, IA; brother, Jon (Julie) of Peosta, IA; and sister-in-law, Judi Cunconan of Des Moines.

The family would like to thank Dr. Phillip Colletier, the staff of Mercy Cancer Center Radiology, and the Mercy Hospice team for their care and compassion.

Our gratitude also goes to Steve Radke and Kraig Kramme of Willis Cadillac for their many kindnesses to Ken during his illness.
