"Huey" Long, 66, a club manager for Mineral Wells American Legion Post No. 75, died Tuesday, March 24, 1998, at a Fort Worth hospital. Funeral: 2 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church. Burial: Greenwood Memorial Park Cemetery in Phoenix, Ariz. Honorary pallbearers: members of Mineral Wells American Legion Post No. 75. Memorials: Boys State Scholarship Fund, Department of Texas, Box 789, Austin, Texas 78767. William B. "Huey" Long was born Sept. 15, 1931, in Phoenix, Ariz. He was a member of Mineral Wells American Legion Post No. 75, serving as post commander from 1975 to 1977 and post adjutant from 1978 until his death. He was elected in July 1997 as American Legion department commander for the state of Texas. Mr. Long's longtime community involvements included Palo Pinto County Hearty Association where he worked as president as many as three times and served on its board of directors. He also helped the American Cancer Society and was a treasurer and longtime helper for the Crazy Water Festival. He founded the Mineral Wells Air Fair, bringing crowds to Mineral Wells for five years and was also involved in the "Rails to Trails" project. Mr. Long helped the Catholic Church food bank by bringing food. In 1952 he enlisted in the Army and graduated from Infantry OCS in 1953. He came to Texas to attend flight school for fixed-wing aircraft at Gary Air Force Base in San Marcos, then at Fort Sill, Okla. He attended helicopter school at Fort Rucker, Ala. in 1955 and was assigned to Fort Wolters in Mineral Wells in 1956 as the first TAC officer for the Army Warrant Officer Candidate flight training program there. In 1957, he joined Southern Airways as a helicopter flight instructor where he worked until Fort Wolters closed in 1973. Prior to being elected department commander for the state of Texas, he was Division Four commander and vice-commander for the department. Survivors: Good friend, David McCoy of Mineral Wells; and cousins, Francis Brunson of Sun City, Ariz., and Carolyn Nicholson of Phoenix.
