More detail on this person: CW4 "Mike" Madden, of Daleville, AL, died 8 August 2002, after a long fight with cancer.

Mike was a member of "Camp" Rucker's 1st WOC Class, ACHPC 55-Fox, helping to re-open the post in September 1954 and graduating as a WOJG and awarded the wings of an Army Aviator on 30 April 1955.

Mike fought in Korea in the early 50's with the 187th Airborne, making the unit's combat jump. A flying tour on the Greenland icecap later in the 50's, led to Mike being selected as the "Army Aviator of the Year" in 1960, by the Army Aviation Association of America.

Mike flew with the 116th AHC in Vietnam in '65-'66. After retirement at Fort Rucker, Mike was the "boss" of the post Craft Shop for many years.

CW4 Madden is survived by his wife, Nicole, of Daleville, AL.

From: Don Joyce

Mike's classmate in ACHPC 55-Fox and friend for almost 48 years.

After his return from Vietnam, my brother, the late CWO Michael J. Madden (6/2/1933 -- 8/8/2002) served as lead pilot for Vice-President Hubert H. Humphrey. He was at that time flying a fixed-wing KingAir B-200. I don't remember the exact dates.

Mike had explained to me how he conceived and executed the development of the helicopter gun ship using weapons obtained from a weapons disposal depot in Salt Lake City. I am not aware of any authoritative history of the development of the helicopter gun ship.
