More detail on this person: Brian Patrick McAteer Toms River resident Brian Patrick McAteer, whose family resides in Point Pleasant, died Sunday, Sept. 23 at Beth Israel Hospital. He was 63 years old. Mr. McAteer celebrated his 10th anniversary as a heart transplant recipient in February. He served in the Army from 1966 to 1972. He was a combat helicopter pilot and a Vietnam Veteran. He was presented the Army Commendation Medal, Air Medal and two Purple Hearts. He was a drug officer and instrumental in organizing his unit to aid the local orphanage there with donations of time and money. He was a member of the Vietnam Helicopter Pilot's Association. Mr. McAteer was also a student at Georgian Court University, a dean's scholar from 2004 to 2005 and a history major. He had a love for history and his hope was to teach and impart this love to young minds. He was a devoted husband, who deeply loved his children and grandchildren. He was our hero, and will be missed so very much. He was predeceased by his parents, Patrick and Nina McAteer. Surviving are his wife, Maureen; two children, Gavin J. McAteer of Bloomfield and Lara Christine McAteer of Point Pleasant; a stepdaughter, Jennifer Leigh Melendez; son-in-law, Anthony Melendez; three grandchildren, Michael, Ashleigh and Hannah Melendez of Hopatcong; a sister, Lenore Punk of Point Pleasant; and two nephews, Scott and Jason Punk. The Silverton Memorial Funeral Home, Toms River, handled the arrangements. He was interred at the Brig. Gen. Wm. C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Vietnam Helicopter Pilot's Association Scholarship Fund at VHPA, 5530 Birdcage St., Suite 105, Citrus Heights, CA 95610, Attention: Scholarship Fund.
