More detail on this person: Douglas "Doug" John Martin, longtime resident of Monument, passed away Monday (Oct. 17, 2016) in Colorado Springs.

He was born to John and Elizabeth Martin on March 8, 1946, in Olean, N.Y.

Doug graduated from Allegany (N.Y.) Central High School in 1964, attended St. Bonaventure University and graduated from the University of Colorado. He served in the U.S. Army as an infantry officer and helicopter pilot during the Vietnam War, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross.

After leaving the service, he settled with his family in Colorado. He was a partner in HMC LLP, doing consulting for residential land development and working on projects across the Colorado Front Range. He and his business partner managed construction projects from Thornton to Colorado Springs with a primary focus on Highlands Ranch and Castle Rock.

Though he worked hard with long hours, Doug always found time to venture west to the central and southern mountain ranges. He spent countless weekends venturing to different mountain passes, small mining towns and peaceful valleys.

After retiring, he traveled the world with his wife, Joan Ried Martin, including adventures in Europe, the Antarctic, Israel, Central America, South America and Asia. But some of his most cherished memories are the trips and activities he did with Joan and their grandchildren. He spent countless hours at basketball and soccer games, at the park and sledding.

Doug leaves behind his wife, Joan Ried Martin; his daughter, Colette Christina Martin of Monument; his grandchildren, Regan Ried Mukpik, Braeden Martin Mukpik and Carlaen Connolly Mukpik; four living siblings, Kay Kiffer, Donna Urdaneta, Margie Feldmann and John Martin; as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. He also leaves with his family his sense of adventure and generosity to others.

The funeral will take place from 3 to 4 p.m. Friday (Oct. 21, 2016) at Tri Lakes United Methodist Church in Monument.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the Ryan Pappas Foundation, attn: RAD, P.O. Box 2681, Monument, CO 80132. RAD stands for Real Alternatives to Drinking and Drugs, a program that offers events and activities for area students.
