More detail on this person: Burnum Edgar "Major" Melton, Jr., age 83, of Birmingham, AL passed away peacefully on May 13, 2016. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He attended Woodlawn High School. After high school he enrolled in the military and was a member of the "220th Aviation Company "Catkillers". He served 3 tours in Vietnam where he flew a Birddog, O-1, & a helicopter. He is credited with a Distinguished Flying Cross medal for flying the most wounded soldiers to safety during the Vietnam War along with multiple other medals. He retired from the military a Major. Edgar is preceded in death by his parents Burnum Edgar & Inez Melton, his wife of 56 years Linda Lorraine Linard Melton, and his two sons Mark Melton & Daniel Melton. He is survived by his brother Dr. J Gordon Melton; children Eddie Melton (Vicky), Cyndy Dunning (Edwin), Gregory Melton. Grandchildren Michael Melton (Lisa), Stephani Melton Shields (Drew), Briane Melton Johnson (Jeremy), Meagan Melton, Morgan Melton, Brandi Hanby, Cameron Heafner, Candice Scheibel (Ron), Justin Dunning (Faith), and Sarah Swatzell. Great grandchildren Zachery and Cody Melton, Tristan and Ashton Johnson, Jack, Eli & Jed Hanby, and Ivan Dunning. Edgar loved fishing, reading his bible, and his Liberty overalls. In lieu of flowers we ask that you instead hug your loved ones because life is short and we are not promised tomorrow.
