More detail on this person: George L Martin George L. Martin, US Army LTC (ret), passed away at the age of 83 on March 19 after several months of illness. A highly decorated pilot with over 3600 hours of pilot time in 10 aircraft types, and with 600 combat pilot hours, Col. Martin served the United States across the globe for 20 years including a year in Korea and 2 tours of Vietnam at the height of the war. In his post-Army civilian life Col. Martin worked in several commercial ventures, retiring in 1992 to be part of the large San Antonio military community. Col. Martin was an avid golfer and his retirement allowed him to pursue the sport with gusto as a club maker, a greens committee member, a volunteer at the SBC classic PGA tournament for years, and as an enthusiastic and skilled player. He formed many lasting friendships in the golf community, particularly with his friends at the Ft. Sam Houston Golf Club. His most satisfying relationships in golf, however, were through his work with the members of the Wounded Warrior community at Ft. Sam. Col. Martin found that, through his golf instruction and career counseling for this community of amputees, he could give back to his fellow warriors, and this was his greatest passion in the last decade of his life. Col. Martin is survived by his wife of 62 years, Barbara Jean Shafer Martin, his sons Jeffery (Linda) and David (Marianne), daughter Jennifer Martin-Gaede (Donald), and grandchildren Zachary Kirkman, Caitlin and Darcy Martin, and Shelby Martin. SERVICE SUNDAY MARCH 23, 2014 2:00 P.M. PORTER LORING NORTH CHAPEL A reception will follow the service at the Ft. Sam Houston Golf Club, 1050 Harry Wurzbach Road. The family requests that donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project at Warrior Family Support Center, 3138 Rawley Chamber, San Antonio, 78219
