More detail on this person: Thomas "Tom" McAndrew Jr., Retired Lt. Colonel, 82, of South Tampa, passed away Friday (May 10, 2013).

He was born in Bradford, Pa., and came to Tampa 30 years ago after a 20-year distinguished career with the U.S. Army, retiring as a Lt. Colonel.

Tom was an Army aviator (helicopters), serving two tours in Vietnam. During his military career he was awarded the Bronze Star (BSM), two Air Medals (ARCOM-10LC and AM-30LC), the National Defense Service Medal (NDSM-10LC), Combat Infantryman Badge (CIB), Armed Forces Reserve Medal (AFRM), Good Conduct Medal (GCM), Meritorious Service Medal (MSM), Legion of Merit (LOM) and numerous other medals and awards.

After retirement, Tom spent some time in the business world. After moving to Tampa he dedicated much of his time as a volunteer on MacDill Air Force Base at the optometry clinic, fitness center, library and thrift shop. He also volunteered at Meals on Wheels and annually at the TPC Tampa ProAm.

Tom was an athlete and has always enjoyed sports. He played baseball in his youth and, later in life, enjoyed racquetball and golf. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his daughters, Teresa M. (husband Ashley) Miller of South Tampa, Patricia J. McAndrew of Atlanta, Ga. and Mary Elizabeth McAndrew of Portland, Ore.; their mother, Rita G. McAndrew; grandsons, Daniel Paul Miller, Patrick C. Miller and Michael T. Miller; and other family.

A Gathering In Memory will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the South Tampa Chapel of Brewer & Sons Funeral Homes. Mass will be celebrated at Christ the King Church at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Burial to take place at Arlington National Cemetery.
