Dwayne McCartney, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 24, 2009 after a short battle with lung cancer. Dwayne was born August 10, 1941 in Spokane, Washington to Charles and Martha McCartney. He was raised in Deary, Idaho with his three brothers and graduated from the University of Idaho. He first found his passion for teaching prior to serving his country in the United States Marine Corps completing a tour of duty in Viet Nam as a CH-53 helicopter pilot, retiring as a captain. Dwayne married Shirley Williams in 1971 and they have three children together. He owned several businesses before returning to his true passion, teaching. Dwayne retired from teaching at Valley High School in 2006. He had an endless love for his family and his students. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles, and step-sister, Tyne. He is survived by his wife, Shirley; his son, Ty; daughters, Shannon (Linden), and Lauren; brothers, Charles, Ronald (Marlene), and Richard (Lynn); step-mother, Francis; and step-brother, Ron; grandchildren, Gabby, Ana, Alexander, Sylar, and Ariann; and many nieces and nephews. A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, October 31, 2009 at 11:00 a.m., with a visitation one hour prior. Graveside Memorial Services will follow the funeral at Fort Douglas Post Chapel, 110 South Fort Douglas Boulevard (east of University of Utah) Salt Lake City.
