More detail on this person: William Leigh McKeown McKEOWN, Col. WILLIAM LEIGH (Age 76) Of Winchester, VA, died Thursday, December 18, 2003, in Winchester Medical Center. Col. McKeown was born on March 13, 1927, in Charlotte, NC, the son of the late John and Martha Smith McKeown. He was retired as a project manager for Boeing Computer Services. He was a member of Franconia United Methodist Church and a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, The University of Washington Honor Society, the American Helicopter Society, the U.S. Army Retired Association, Army Otter Caribou Association, and Twirly Birds. He was a graduate of the University of Washington-Seattle with an MBA and a graduate of George Washington University with a BS in Geology. He also attended the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Executive Program. He was a volunteer at the Free Medical Clinic and tutored secondary students at Quarles Elementary School in Math and science. He was an avid snow skier and aviation enthusiast. He was a decorated veteran of three wars, serving with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific during World War II, the U.S. Army in Korea and Vietnam. His aviation career began with the U.S. Air Training Command in San Marcos, TX. He then attended the Army Aviation School in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, the U. S. Army Instrument School at Ft. George Meade, MD, the Command and General Staff College, and the Industrial College of the Armed Forces. On September 19, 1947, Col. McKeown married Patricia Terry in Washington, DC. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Terry McKeown of Winchester, VA and Sharon McKeown Halvorson (Mrs. Steven) of Monterey, CA; three grandchildren, William Lorenz of Waterville, ME, Patrick Lorenz and Christopher Lorenz, both of Winchester, VA. He was godfather to Wayne Leigh McKeown of Upper Marlboro, MD and Alaina Capone of Edgewater, MD.One brother, Charles McKeown is deceased. A funeral service will be conducted on Sunday at 2 p.m. at OMPS FUNERAL HOME - Amherst Chapel with the Reverend Susan Burke, officiating. Burial with Full Military Honors will be at 11 a.m. in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA on Friday, January 16, 2004. The family will receive friends at Omps Funeral Home - Amherst Chapel on Sunday following the funeral service until 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Winchester Parks Foundation, Green Circle Enhancement Fund, 1001 East Cork Street, Winchester, VA 22601.
