'Burt' Metcalf Aug. 13, 1930 - Jan. 16, 2008 MONTROSE - Burton D. "Burt" Metcalf died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008 at Montrose Memorial Hospital. He was born in Idaho on Aug. 13, 1930 to Burton and Bernice Metcalf. Burt's colorful background included time as a B-29 mechanic in the Air Force, a Merchant Marine, a pilot for United Airlines and a helicopter pilot in the U.S. Army. He served proudly in the Korean conflict and in the Vietnam War where he flew a helicopter gunship. He was honorably discharged in 1966 and began flying helicopters commercially, working for companies in Louisiana, Utah, Idaho, Montana and Colorado.In 1971, he married his wife, Barbara. Her three daughters and his son from a previous marriage made for a full family. They moved to Montrose, Colo. in 1973 where he eventually began his own business, Thunderbird Helicopters. He loved to fly and was a well-respected pilot on the Western Slope, doing everything from sling work to search and rescue. ("You call, we haul" was the motto his wife adopted). In 1989, Burt became interested in elk ranching. Eventually he purchased a ranch south of town where they raised elk full-time after his retirement as a pilot in 1993. He loved working with the elk and the quiet life of the ranch. Burt was preceded in death by his parents and stepdaughter, Toni Chatfield Sander. He is survived by his wife Barbara Metcalf, of Montrose; son, Larry Metcalf and wife Penny of Montrose; stepdaughter, Pamela Morrill of Cortez, Colo.; stepdaughter and son-in-law, Jenny and Bob Davis of Gillette, Wyo.; his sister, Barbara Robinson of Napa, Idaho; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Graveside services with military honors will be held Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008, at 1:30 p.m., at Grand View Cemetery west of Montrose. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Hospice and Palliative Care of Western Colorado, in remembrance of Burt, P.O. Box 1804, Montrose, CO 81402.
