More detail on this person: James A Michner, 55 Michner vice president 'enjoyed life' Jackson Citizen Patriot (MI) - Tuesday, March 26, 2002 James A. Michner, whose family name became synonymous with the plating industry in Jackson, died of cancer Sunday at his home in Summit Township. He was 55. Michner was vice president of Michner Plating Co., 520 N. Mechanic St., the company founded by his grandfather, Joseph Michner, in 1935. He also was president of Salco Engineering & Manufacturing Inc., 506 N. Mechanic St. Salco, a sister company of Michner Plating, is a wire and steel fabricating company that makes customized wire containers to transport specific parts or products. James A. Michner worked his way up the family-owned corporation, said his father, Walter Michner. "He liked what he was doing and he enjoyed life," Walter Michner said. Michner Plating did work for the automotive industry, and one of its biggest customers was Thorrez-Maes Manufacturing Co., Jackson's leading screw machine products manufacturer. Michner Plating grew to include M&L Plating of Jackson and Miller Plating in Battle Creek. Michner Plating also had tie-ins to many other area businesses. James A. Michner was a graduate of Culver Military Academy and Michigan State University. He was a captain in the U.S. Army and served in the Vietnam War as a helicopter pilot. He was a member of the Country Club of Jackson and Delta Tel Delta at Michigan State University. His father said he liked to play golf. Michner was preceded in death by his first wife, Beverly Ann Brown Michner. He is survived by his second wife, Heidi; three sons, James A. Michner II, Jason Michner and B. Gregory Hutto; father, Walter; a brother, Joseph; two sisters, Suzy Hamilton and Camille Cavanaugh; and a granddaughter, Hannah.
