More detail on this person: George F Newton Army Col. George F. Newton, 51, of 117 Lake Lorraine Circle died Wednesday at the Brooke Army Medical Center, San Antonio, Tex. He was the husband of Thalia A. (Andrews) Newton. Born in Newport, he was a son of Christina (Harpin) Newton of Portsmouth, and the late George Newton. Colonel Newton was in the Army for 30 years and served in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was a 1956 graduate of Boston University, where he received his commission as second lieutenant in the Army. He was also a graduate of the National War College, Maxwell Air Force Base, Montgomery, Ala. While in Korea, he commanded the 17th Aviation Group, and during his tours of Vietnam he commanded the 159th Aviation Battalion and the 101st Airborne Division. During his assignment at Fort Rucker, Ala., from 1979 to 1982, he was recognized as an authority in aviation training and operations. His most recent assignment was deputy commander at the Army Air Ground Operations School, Hurlburt Field, Florida. He held the Distinghished Flying Cross, with three Oak Leaf clusters, the Legion of Merit, with two Oak Leaf clusters, and the Silver Star. {Survivors edited for privacy.] A military funeral will be held Monday at 9:30 a.m. at the Hurlburt Field Chapel, Highway 98 West. Burial will be in the Barrancas National Cemetery, Pensacola.
