More detail on this person: Joseph T. "Tommy" Olney LAKE CHARLES - Joseph T. "Tommy" Olney, 59, of Lake Charles passed away, surrounded by family and friends, at 2:11 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, 2006, in his residence. He was a native and lifelong resident of Lake Charles. Mr. Olney was a graduate of Lake Charles High School, Class of 1964, and McNeese State University, Class of 1969. He was a three-year letterman as a pitcher for the McNeese Baseball team. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Army, serving as a Captain, during the Vietnam War. Mr. Olney served as an Artillery Forward Observer, and received the Bronze Star, the Air Medal and Twelve Oak Leaf Clusters, and the Vietnamese Service Medal. He was the Senior Helicopter Pilot for Air Logistics with 32 years of service. Mr. Olney received numerous awards and honors including the Igor Sikorsky Award for Humanitarian Service for evacuating 44 personnel from an endangered platform, which was threatened by a mobile offshore drilling rig. Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Carolyn Simon Olney, of Lake Charles; two daughters, Tammera Olney Welsh and husband, Paul, of Baton Rouge and Kimberley Olney Trunick and husband, Ted, of Lake Charles; one son, Troy Olney, of Lake Charles; six grandchildren, Caroline, Megan, Julia, and Zachary Welsh, and Madi Monlezun and Grayson Trunick; one brother, David Olney and wife, Cammie, and their daughter, Jett, of Lake Charles. He is preceded in death by his parents, Ollie Paul and Bertha (Dalovisio) Olney. His funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 29, 2006, in St. Martin dePorres Catholic Church. The Rev. Keith Pellerin will officiate. Burial will be in Consolata Cemetery under the direction of Johnson Funeral Home. Visitation was observed from 3 p.m. until 9 p.m. Saturday, with a scripture service being held at 7 p.m., and a rosary being recited at 7:30 p.m. in the funeral home. Visitation in the funeral home will continue today from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the St. Martin DePorres Catholic Church Building Fund.
