More detail on this person: Melvin N. Oatis 1930-2010 Melvin N. Oatis, a proud member of the U.S. Marine Corps, went on his final journey to meet his Heavenly Father on Sunday, Oct. 31, 2010, at 4 a.m. in the morning. Melvin was born on Jan. 20, 1930, in Houston and died on Oct. 31, 2010, at the Crestview Manor in Crestview, Fla. Melvin served his country on one combat tour in Korea and on two combat tours in Vietnam. For his service he was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation, Korean Service Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. Melvin lived in the Crestview, Fla., area as a young boy and returned to Crestview in May 2009 to live near his cousin, Jerry Parker. While in the U.S. Marine Corps he spent some time in California as well as other bases around the country and after retiring from the Marine Corps spent some time in the Abbeville, La., area to be near relatives, David and Ruby Parker. He was admired by all for his spirit of independence after suffering a stroke many years ago. After losing his ability to drive his auto, he remained as independent as possible riding his motorized chair around town to take care of as many of his needs as possible. He is survived by his loving cousins, Jerry and Frank Parker of Crestview, Royce Nichols of Tallahassee, Fla., Leon Parker of Mauricevlle, Texas, and Connie Robison of Abbeville. Graveside funeral services with military honors will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 3, at Liveoak Park Memorial Cemetery at 1 p.m. with Father Lagura officiating. Melvin's family wishes to recognize the staff and residents of Crestview Manor for their loving support and encouragement to him during his stay at their facility. They went above and beyond to take care of him. Dr. Christopher and Covenant Hospice are also appreciated for their kindness and professional support during his illness. Arrangements are entrusted to Whitehurst Powell Funeral Home in Crestview.
