More detail on this person: Michael R Plummer, 60 Michael R. Plummer Daytona Beach News-Journal (FL) - Sunday, June 10, 2007 FL United States Michael R. Plummer, 60, Port Orange, passed away at home Friday, June 1, 2007, surrounded by his wife and children. Mike was born May 9, 1947, in Pittsburgh, Pa., to Mary Roth and Maurice Plummer. As a young-ster, he excelled in art and athletics, setting school records in track and field. His love of sports stayed with him all his life: he played basketball at many Port Orange courts, where he kept up with men half his age. However, he most loved the Monday night game at Silver Sands Middle School, where he was admired for his outside game. He golfed and lifted weights as well. When he could no longer play golf, he attended the Masters practice session in Augusta, Georgia, with a dear friend. As a young man, Mike was selected for flight school while serving in the Army. As a Chief Warrant Officer, he went on to pilot a UH-I Huey in the Polecats Squadron during two tours in Vietnam, where he took part in daring rescue missions. He earned numerous awards, including an Air Medal, two Bronze Stars and the Republic of Viet Nam Gallantry Cross. After his service, Mike lived with his family in Laurel, Maryland, where he played on local softball and dart teams. He relocated his family to Daytona Beach, where he worked for many years as a car salesman at Gary Yeomans Ford. Later in life, he sought to try something new, and earned his real estate license. Mike was curious and loved to learn, his bookshelves attest to this. Throughout his life he enjoyed reading, boating, fishing, gardening, completing home improvement projects, researching his family's genealogy, and listening to the music of his youth - he loved Doo-Wop, Elvis and Johnny Cash best. He was a gifted storyteller, regaling family and friends with anecdotes of his adventures as a youngster and during the war. He was a homebody at heart, and enjoyed spending evenings with his beloved wife and their dogs. Mike was predeceased by his parents, Mary (Roth) Evans and Maurice Plummer; a sister, Michelle Vestovich; and stepfather, Frank Pallotta. He is survived by his wife of 24 years, MaryLou; his daughter, Melinda and her husband, Steve Ziskinder, Palm City; his son, Michael Plummer, Palm Beach; a sister, Christine Saunders, Pittsburgh; grandsons, Adam and Ryan Ziskinder; his mother-in-law, Alice McWilliams, Port Orange; and a host of other relatives and friends, including dear family friends, John and Jane Bell, of Port Orange. We will miss him terribly, but will take joy in the gifts he left behind: a passion for sports, music and learning. We feel fortunate that in his last months, he was able to take his grandsons on their first fishing trip, reunite with old family friends, and take joy in anticipating the birth of a third grandson. We will remember some of his last words: "Listen to your family and friends, and be good to them. This is the most important thing." Friends and family are invited to attend a memorial service at Shannon Funeral Home, 4084 Halifax Dr., Port Orange, on Saturday, June 16, at 11:00 a.m. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL 32129.
