More detail on this person: Charles D. Pittman Charles D. Pittman VIRGINIA BEACH Retired U.S. Army Lt. Cmdr. Charles "Dan" Dandridge Pittman passed on at dawn Aug. 23, 2005, after a courageous battle with cancer and Alzheimer's. Dan was born Nov. 24, 1924, in Norfolk and graduated from Maury High School early to join the Navy during World War II. He was a sonarman on the lead minesweeper during the Allied assault at the Battle of Anzio Beach. In 1951, Dan graduated from the University of Virginia with a degree in economics and business. While in Charlottesville he met and married Dorothy Anne Wilkerson, his lifelong love. Dan was a career serviceman who fought also in the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. Dan is survived by his daughter, Anne Scott Collins and son, Charles D. Pittman Jr., both of Virginia Beach, as well as five grandchildren, Lee Collins IV, Peppy Collins, Matthew Pittman, Margaret Scott Pittman and Charles D. Pittman III. Dan was the son of Elihu Buck Pittman and Ivy Folsome Bridges Pittman and is survived by two sisters, Jean Kight of Norfolk and Mildred Miller of Virginia Beach. Dan was predeceased by his wife, Anne, as well as his sister, Christine Johnston of Norfolk. The family is deeply grateful for the compassionate, competent and loving care he received at Our Lady of Perpetual Help during the last eight months of his life. A graveside service will be conducted Monday at 4 p.m. at Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery, Virginia Beach, by the Rev. Julian Linnell. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that any donations in Dan's memory be made to Dallas Plemmons Ministries, 3737 South Plaza Trail, Virginia Beach, VA 23452. H.D.
