More detail on this person: George D. Pullen Jr. SMITHFIELD - George D. Pullen Jr., 90, passed away on Jan. 26 at his home in Smithfield, surrounded by his family and loved ones. He was born in Oakland on July 13, 1921, the son of George D. Pullen and Helen May Crowell Pullen. George married Ruth Helen Bushey of Waterville in 1945 and raised a wonderful family during their 66 years of marriage. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1941 as a private and retired in 1971 as a lieutenant colonel. During his 30-year Marine Corps career, he was an elite member and coach of the Marine Corps Rifle and Pistol team in 1964, which was awarded the Lloyd Trophy, Shively Trophy and Wirgman Trophy. He also participated in Operation Deep Freeze during the International Geophysical Year at the South Pole in 1957 and 1958. He proudly served in World War II, the Korean and Vietnam wars and was stationed at numerous Marine Corps bases around the country and world. After relocating back to Maine in 1971, he served as chief deputy sheriff of Somerset County for many years, in addition to serving as town selectman for Smithfield. George is survived by his wife, Ruth; son Ricky and Donna Pullen and their daughter, Ashley; daughter Kathi Knight and her children, Kendra, Molly, Matthew and Kalie; and daughter Lisa and Louis Turner and their children, Melissa, Caitlin, Jenna and Lauren, and his special granddaughter, Erin; grandson Granville Dexter Pullen II and his children, Granville Dexter Pullen III, Sakara and Kieron; brother Horace Pullen of Oakland; and 12 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents; brother Edward of Oakland; and son 1st Lt. Granville Dexter Pullen, Marine Corps. Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 29, at Wheeler Funeral Home, 26 Church St., in Oakland. His life and adventures will be celebrated with services at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 30, at Smithfield Baptist Church. There will be committal service with military honors at noon on Thursday, Feb. 2, at the New Maine Veterans' Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, in Augusta. George is survived by his wife, Ruth; son Ricky and Donna Pullen and their daughter, Ashley; daughter Kathi Knight and her children, Kendra, Molly, Matthew and Kalie; and daughter Lisa and Louis Turner and their children, Melissa, Caitlin, Jenna and Lauren, and his special granddaughter, Erin; grandson Granville Dexter Pullen II and his children, Granville Dexter Pullen III, Sakara and Kieron; brother Horace Pullen of Oakland; and 12 great-grandchildren.
