Potts Jr., entrepreneur Atlanta Journal-Constitution, The (GA) - Saturday, August 5, 1995 The funeral for entrepreneur Lawrence E. Potts Jr. of Atlanta will be at 1 p.m. today at H.M. Patterson & Son, Spring Hill, with burial Sunday at 1 p.m. CST at Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin, Ky. Mr. Potts, 46, died Thursday at Piedmont Hospital. Born and reared in Kentucky, Mr. Potts attended Emory University from 1967 to 1969 before serving in Vietnam as an Army helicopter pilot. He rose to the rank of chief warrant officer and earned a Bronze Star. He was shot down three times during the war, according to a brother, Charlie Potts of Atlanta. After returning from Vietnam, he attended the University of Kentucky, graduating in 1975. In 1976, he went to work for Trust Company Bank, becoming a vice president of the Factoring Division. He left Trust Company to form Potts Investments Inc. and Central Georgia Cable Systems Inc. He sold the cable operation in 1988. In 1989, Mr. Potts founded Sun States Beverage Co. in Doraville, manufacturer of Sun Clear sparkling water and local distributor of Double Cola products. He also was a general partner of Georgian Hotel Associates, which owns and manages the Georgian Hotel Condominiums in Athens. An avid ocean sailor, he enjoyed taking his 46-foot sailboat, Stargazer, throughout the Caribbean. "For the past 15 years he had been interested in sailing," Charlie Potts said. "It tied in with his interest in flying. Both depended on the wind." Also surviving is a daughter, Emily Potts of Atlanta; and another brother, John Potts of Atlanta.
