More detail on this person: Gene Clarkson Russell, 66, of Whitehaven passed quietly at his home on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011.

Born on Nov. 7, 1944, in Camden, S.C., he was the son of the late Gene Russell and Jane Clarkson Russell. He was a member of the Whitehaven Heritage Association, Whitehaven Methodist Episcopal Church, Vietnam Helicopters Pilot Association, American Airline Pilots Association and the Sigma Chi fraternity.

He was a captain with Piedmont Aviation and US Airways for more than 30 years and was also a Dash Seven Captain with Henson Aviation Inc. in Salisbury.

He graduated from Roanoke College in Virginia in 1966 and soon after joined the U.S. Army, flying Huey gunships and Cobras over Vietnam. Capt. Russell was a highly decorated veteran, having been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Air Medal with Clusters and various medals and ribbons related to his service. He loved boating, sporting clay shooting, fishing and spending time with his family and friends.

He is survived by his loving wife, Susan Anne Ludlam Russell and her children, Kate Bounds and her husband, Kyle, of Salisbury and Joseph T. Dashiell Jr. of Connecticut; a devoted sister, Susan Russell Fogerty and her husband, Bill, of Virginia Beach, Va.; several nieces and nephews, Tim Fogerty and his fiancee, Jen Parker, of Wilson, N.C., Lisa and Ben Millspaw and their sons, Josh and Alex, of Charlotte, N.C., Becky Russell Fogerty and her fiance, Matt Leno, of Newark, Del.; a goddaughter, Lisa Millspaw of North Carolina; two godsons, Rusty Jones of New Jersey and John Kunkel Jr. of Florida; and longtime close friends, Russ and Ann Jones of Onancock and John Kunkel III of Florida.

The family will conduct private memorial services at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice and/or Whitehaven Methodist Episcopal Church, c/o Charlotte Lilly, Whitehaven, Md. 21856.
