More detail on this person: Edward S. "Ted" Rebholz Edward S. "Ted" Rebholz, Lt. Col., US Army Ret'd., passed away Sunday, May 7, 2017, at UW Hospital from complications of Lymphoma with his wife of 59 years and daughters at his bedside. Ted was born August 2, 1935, in Winnipeg, Canada, the son of Russell and Maxine (Spafford) Rebholz. His family returned to Wisconsin, when he was a young boy, at the conclusion of his father, Russ Rebholz's professional (Canadian Football Hall of Fame) career. He graduated in 1954 from Shorewood High School and in 1959 from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and received his Master's Degree from Ball State University. Ted married Nan Vinson on June 18, 1958, in Milwaukee. WI. He began his 23 years of military service as a fixed wing and helicopter pilot which included two tours in Vietnam and a four-month tour supporting the geodetic survey in Antarctica. His family enjoyed tours of duty in 11 states and in Germany. During his military career, he earned the Air Force Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service, Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Commendation Eighth through Tenth Awards, and a Bronze Star with oak leaf cluster and many other awards and recognition. Upon retirement from the Army in 1982, Ted began a second career at the University of Dubuque as Chairman of the Aviation Department. While at the University of Dubuque, he was recognized by the students as Teacher of the Year and became a member of the Heritage Society. He was the Women's Softball coach and defensive line coach for the football team. In 1994, he moved his family to Portage and immediately became involved in Rotary International-Portage Club where he served as president and was the recipient of the highest recognition--the Paul Harris award. He was also active in the Historical Society, Indian Agency House, Museum at the Portage and Portage United Methodist Church. He served as chairperson of the Portage 2004 Sesquicentennial Celebration. Ted is survived by his wife Nan of Portage; daughters Robin (Michael) Kvalo of Portage, Cheryl (Tim) Tierney of South Carolina; grandchildren Heather (Clay) Carraway, Benjamin Kvalo, Matthew (Luciana) Kvalo, and Samantha (Brad) Poole; great-grandchildren Camryn Carraway, Piper Poole, Liam Carraway and Noah Kvalo; brothers F. Thomas (Sue), James A. (Kathleen); step-sister Bonny (Lyn) Oestreich; brother and sister-in-law David and Sharon Vinson; nieces and nephews Wendy, Jenny, Scott, Chris, Scott and Michael; step-nephew and step-niece Benjamin Oestreich and Stephanie Marthaler; two very close cousins, Harold and Warren (Dorothy) Rebholz, and many very close friends from his Army career. He was preceded in death by an infant twin sister, Robin; his parents, and his step-mother, June. Funeral services will be held at Portage United Methodist Church on Friday, May 12, 2017, at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Tom Countryman officiating. Military honors will be provided by the Portage Area Veterans Honor Guard following the service. Private family inurnment will take place at a later date. Visitation will be at Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home in Portage on Thursday, May 11, 2017, from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., and at the church on Friday, May 12, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials may be given to the Portage Rotary Club, P O Box 818, Portage, WI 53901; Russ and Ted Rebholz Memorial Scholarship and mail to Pflanz Mantey Mendrala Funeral Home, 430 W. Wisconsin St., Portage, WI 53901; Portage Historical Society, P O Box 727, Portage, WI 53901; or the UW Carbone Cancer Center, 600 Highland Avenue K4/658, Madison, WI 53792-6164. The family would like to thank the nurses and doctors at UW Hospital in B6/6 for their care and compassion. On a cloudless (Field Office Flying Day), a strong, beautiful soul took is final flight.
