More detail on this person: Flying Cessna 182K
N2510R enroute from Lewiston, ID to Walla Walla,
WA. The pilot was returning home from a work
assignment for the plane's owner when he
encountered a rain storm over the destination
airport. The last contact with the pilot was at
2100 while attempting to locate the destination
airport in a rain storm. The pilot last reported
he was 8 miles out on final near Waitsburg, then
lost his location & was climbing out. CAP
conducted an air-ground search that involved 23
aircraft & 95 personnel searching 13,000 square
miles that extended from the Tri-Cities to the W
to Lewiston on the E & Pullman on the N to
Stateline on the S. The search was suspended 28
April. However, the ground search continued on 29
April with Columbia County ground teams mounted
on 14 snowmobiles probing an area NE of Walla
Walla in the Blue Mountains. Off road motorcycle
teams resumed the search in the same area the
weekend of 4-5 May.
The wreckage was found by a man repairing fencing
on the E slope of Newby Mountain about 150 ft
below the summit, in the Blue Mountains. This was
12 E of Dayton, WA & 22 NE of the destination
airport. The aircraft had been covered by trees
that were knocked down in the crash as well as
snow. There were very little human remains left
because of a bear in the area that had to be shot
in order for the ground team to complete its
investigation. Commercial pilot Peter Arthur Roth,
26 with 2100 flight hrs was a US Army helicopter
pilot who flew in Germany & Vietnam. Registered to
Blue Mountain Aviation Co of Walla Walla, WA.
