More detail on this person: Dan J Slayden WIDEMAN - Dan Slayden, 66, of Wideman died Friday, Oct. 10, 2008, at his home. Born Sept. 19, 1942, in Cord, he was the son of Joseph Daniel and Helen Virginia Randall Slayden. He served during the Vietnam War as a combat gunship helicopter pilot, having flown on many missions. He was in the military for 11 years, rising from a private to a captain. He was awarded a Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, a Purple Heart and many other medals. After his military service, he began a career flying helicopters for Mobil Oil Company offshore in the Gulf of Mexico. He enjoyed restoring and building planes, doing carpentry work, building with his hands and Formula One Racing. He was a Christian. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Joan Slayden; a son, Scott Slayden of Sherwood; a daughter, Kerri Lewis of Wideman; a sister, Johnye Armistead of Bastrop, La.; a grandchild, Jessica Lewis of Baton Rouge, La.; a great-grandchild, Aedyn Lewis of Baton Rouge; and several nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Arkansas State Veterans Cemetery in North Little Rock with Lee Hendrix and Dan Loy officiating. No visitation is planned.
