More detail on this person: Lt. Col. James Stephens Lt. Col. James Stephens, 63, of Denver, died Friday, Aug. 29, at Allen Hospital, Waterloo. He was born May 7, 1945, in Winona, Minn., son of Albert and Martha Zill Stephens. He married Sandra Goodsell on March 3, 1976, in Breckenridge, Colo. Lt. Col. Stephens graduated from Waterloo West High School, then entered the U.S. Army and served one tour in Vietnam. He then attended the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, where he obtained his bachelor's degree in business. After graduating he entered the Iowa National Guard as a flight instructor and safety officer and also worked for the National Guard Department of Defense Civil Service. He also attended the University of Southern California, Arizona State University, and the Command and General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth, Kan. Survived by: his wife; a son, Brian (Diana) Belger of Houston, Texas; a grandchild; and two sisters, Darlene (Bob) Jarosh of Waterloo and Debra Carlson of Ackley. Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Denver, with burial in Washington Chapel Cemetery, rural Cedar Falls, with honors by Denver American Legion. Public visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Denver. Memorials: may be directed to Denver American Legion Post 653.
