More detail on this person: Chief Warrant Officer John Jones Smith, 50 OBITUARIES Daily Press (Newport News, VA) - Thursday, April 5, 1990 NEWPORT NEWS - Retired Army Chief Warrant Officer John Jones Smith, 50, died Wednesday, April 4, in Riverside Regional Medical Center. A native of Newport News, Mr. Smith was a longtime Peninsula resident. He owned John J. Smith Ice Cream Co. and was a Catholic. Mr. Smith retired from the Army in 1979 after 21 years of service. He was decorated with the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, Senior Army Aviator Badge, Air Medal, Bronze Star Medal and Meritorious Service Medal. He was a member of the American Legion Post 368 and the Vietnam Helicopter Pilot's Association. Mr. Smith was a member of Mended Hearts Chapter No. 119, where he served as second vice president and chairman of the Ways and Means Committee. Survivors include his wife, Catherine M. Smith; three daughters, Catherine Leslie Porto, Cynthia Lynn McKinley and Virginia Marion St. John, and two sons, John Michael Smith and Patrick Morris Smith, all of Newport News; one sister, Janice Marie Spaulding of Hampton; three brothers, Michael H. Smith of Newport News and William Drew Smith and Holland Samuel Smith, both of Gloucester; and five grandchildren. A funeral will be conducted at 12:30 p.m. Friday in W.J. Smith and Son Funeral Home by a Catholic chaplain. Burial will military honors will be in Hampton National Cemetery, Hampton University section. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 tonight in the funeral home. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to The American Cancer Society, 618 J. Clyde Morris Blvd., Newport News 23601; or The American Heart Association, 753 Thimble Shoals Blvd., Newport News 23606.
