More detail on this person: Garald J. Sauer On April 5, 2007 Garald J. Sauer, known as Gary or "Papa" to his family and friends, peacefully passed away while working at his home in Boise, Idaho. Services will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, April 12. 2007 at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery followed by a picnic at the family home. Cremation is under the direction of Alden Waggoner Funeral Chapel. Gary was born on Jan. 28, 1933 in Bayard, Neb. to John and Emma Sauer. Upon graduating from Weiser High School in 1951, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, eventually serving as a gunner on B52 Strategic Bombers. In May of 1953 he returned to his hometown and married Joanna Mackrill. In the 1960s Gary transferred from the USAF to become an Army aviator and Warrant Officer. He amassed over 24,000 flight hours to include more than 1,500 combat hours in Vietnam where he served with the legendary 1st Brigade (Separate), 101st Airborne Division "Screaming Eagles." His many awards and decorations included: the Legion of Merit, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star with "V" device and oak leaf cluster, Purple Heart, Air Medal with "V" device and 23 oak leaf clusters, the Master Aviator Badge, and numerous others. Gary retired from the Army after nearly 30 years of military service and returned to Idaho where he was employed for 11 years as a corporate pilot for the J.R. Simplot Company. Gary is survived by his wife Joanna of Boise, son Major (Ret.) Jim Sauer and fiancÄ Diana Tyler of Magdalena, New Mexico and Jim's three children, Pacifica, Captain Jeremy Sauer and wife Jene, and Amanda; daughter Stephanie Gullickson and husband Paul, and four sons, Christopher, Dakota, Skyler, and Logan of McCall, Idaho; son Lieutenant Colonel John Sauer and wife Piper, and children Delaney, Hanna, and Jacob of Wahiawa, Hawaii; daughter Susan Montero and husband Glynn, and children Trenten, Savannah, and Caden of Leonard Creek Ranch, Nev.; brother Arly Sauer of Bend, Ore.; his sisters Penny Jensen of Middleton, Idaho and Joni Folger-Sauer of Dallas, Tex.; and brother-in-law Colonel (Ret.) Richard Mackrill and wife Carla of Meridian. Gary was preceded in death by his parents John and Emma Sauer, his step-father Paul Welsh, and his older brother Don. Remembrances in Gary's name may be made to the Boise Rescue Mission, 575 South 13th, Boise, ID 83702. Published in the Idaho Statesman on 4/10/2007.
