"Bill" Shannon, 63, of Boonshill Community, Tennessee, died Sunday, September 9, 2001, at his home. He was born November 26, 1937, in New Albany, Miss., to William L. and Myrtle (Phillips) Shannon. Bill retired from the military after serving four years in the U.S. Air Force, four years in the U.S. Marines and 18 years in the U.S. Army. He served two tours in Vietnam during his service. Bill also was a member of the VFW, Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association and the Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Rita Wright Shannon of the Boonshill Community; a son, William H. Shannon of Tucson, Ariz.; a daughter, Rebecca Kirby of Newell, S.D.; a sister, Carolyn McCoy of Anderson, Calif.; a half-brother, James Welford of Davie, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Ramona Sanovia of Rapid City; and five grandchildren. Visitation will be one hour before Mass of Christian Burial, which will be offered at 10 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 17, at St. Isaac Jogues Church in Rapid City, with Rev. Patrick McCorkell S.J. presiding. Interment will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with military honors provided by Rushmore VFW Post 1273 of Rapid City.
