More detail on this person: Douglas G. Sparks WOODVILLE: Douglas G. Sparks, 65, of Woodville, Ohio died at home on September 16, 2011. He was born in Circleville, Ohio on May 18, 1946 to Ulysses G. and Beulah (Williams) Sparks. He married Nancy J. Betts on May 2, 1969 and she survives. He is survived by a daughter, Jennifer Sparks of Woodville, Ohio; two sons, Brian (Kimberly) Sparks of Tampa, Florida, and David (Kelly) Sparks of Toledo, Ohio; grandchildren, Claire, Kaya, Oliver, and John Sparks; a sister, Janet Waugh of Gainesville, Georgia; several nieces and nephews, Dave and Carol Brown and Adam Thieroff (special friends he loved as family). He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, William, James and Eugene, and four sisters, Arlene, Betty, Barbara and Carol. His passions were his family and friends, Scouting, fishing, working on "his old house", and flying helicopters. Prior to his illness, he was employed by Cryogenics Transportation in Swanton as Terminal Manager and earlier spent over 10 years with Bowlus Trucking in Fremont as Safety Director. He retired as a Major from the Ohio Army National Guard after serving in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War as a helicopter pilot. He flew military helicopters for sixteen years. He received many honors including the Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star, Purple Heart, 28 Air Medals, 3 Army Commendation Medals, Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was active in the Boy Scouts for over 25 years first as Scoutmaster of Troop 329 in Woodville and later in Venturing Crew 329. He provided leadership to 13 young men who achieved the rank of Eagle Scout during his tenure as Scoutmaster. He was a member of American Legion Post #455 in Woodville most recently serving as Post Commander, St. Paul's Episcopal Church, and the Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Association. Friends and family will be received on Friday, September 23, 2011 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. & 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Marsh Funeral Home, 201 W. Main Street, Woodville, Ohio. A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 24, 2011 at Solomon Lutheran Church, Woodville, Ohio, The Rev. Henry Seibert and The Rev. Michael Smith of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania officiating. Interment will be in Westwood Cemetery, Woodville, Ohio with full military honors. A luncheon will be served at the church immediately following the committal services. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to send local boys to Boy Scout camp.
